چکیده

Maesa lanceolata is a medicinal plant, growing in the tropics of Africa and Asia. It produces a mixture of triterpenoid saponins, some of which have medicinal properties that are of commercial interest. For instance, saponins isolated from Maesa lanceolata exert antiviral, haemolytic and antiangiogenic activities [1]. As conventional plant growth and production is not very well controlled, in vitro propagation was explored as an alternative for rapid multiplication. A fast and reliable reproduction of the species was achieved through the development of an axillary shoot formation [2]. To evaluate the production of saponins in Maesa lanceolata grown under in vitro conditions, hairy roots were established by infecting leaf discs with Agrobacterium rhizogenes. In vitro culture of hairy roots is, however, labor intensive and expensive, and there is a risk of contamination and genetic changes. Because of this we are currently developing a protocol for cryopreservation of root tips. Two methods, vitrification and encapsulationdehydration, are being tested.

Essential Oils from Hairy Root Cultures and Field Cultivated Roots of Valerian (Valeriana sisymbriifolium)

Background: Plant cell cultivations are considered as an alternative to agricultural processes for producing valuable phytochemicals (secondary metabolites). The use of plant cell cultures has overcome several inconveniences for the production of secondary metabolites. Objective: The essential oils isolated from roots of 24-month-old field grown valerian (Valeriana sisymbriifolium) and hairy r...

Root cultures of Linum spp. (section Syllinum) as a source of 6-methoxypodopyllotoxin

Linum spp. (Linaceae) has been shown to accumulate cytotoxic lignans such as podophyllotoxin and 6-methoxypodopyllotoxin. Therefore, plant cell and tissue cultures of Linum spp. may be possible alternative sources for the lignan production. In this study, we focused on the production of lignans by root cultures of Linum spp. Hairy root cultures of L. nodiflorum, L.album and L. austriacum and ro...

Cytotoxic activity of in vitro cultures of Linum spp.

There are some reports on the lignan constituents of Linum spp. In this study, we investigated the cyototoxicity of Linum spp. in vitro cultures for the first time. If they show significant cytotoxic activity, they will be valuable candidates for isolation of cytotoxic compounds in large scale from them by tissue culture technology. In our study, we chose normal root, hairy root and calli cultu...

The roots and rhizomes of Valeriana (Valerianaofficinalis L.) are rich with valuable metabolites such as valerenic acid and valepotriates are used as mild sedatives. The aim of the present study was to investigatethe effect of four levels of calcium and potassium compounds (half, full, 2 and 4-fold) of normal Murashige and Skoog (MS) media including KI and CaCl2on ValerianaofficinalisL. hairy r...
